Design is about style, but it’s also about math. Knowing a few key measurements can take a room from “nice” to “professionally styled.” At Niche&Co., we live by these rules of thumb — and they’re easier to follow than you think.

Kitchen & Dining

Lighting Above the Island
Hang pendant lights 30–36 inches above the countertop, spaced evenly across the island. This height gives you balanced light without blocking your view.

Chandelier Above Dining Table
The bottom of your chandelier should hang 30–36 inches above the table. As for size, keep it about ½ to ⅔ the width of the table for perfect proportion.

Counter & Bar Stools

  • For a 36" high counter → choose stools with 24–26 inch seat height.

  • For a 42" high bar → go with 28–30 inch seat height.

Dining Room Rug Size
Choose a rug that extends at least 24 inches beyond the edges of the table so chairs stay on the rug, even when pulled out.

Living Room

Coffee Table to Sofa Distance
Leave 14–18 inches between the sofa and coffee table for easy reach and comfortable flow.

Artwork & Gallery Walls
Hang artwork so the center is 57 inches from the floor (average eye level). For gallery walls, keep 2–3 inches between frames for a clean, cohesive look.

TV Placement
Mount the center of your TV about 42 inches from the floor (eye level when seated). Distance matters too: sit about 1.5–2.5 times the screen’s diagonal size away from the TV.

Rug Placement
In living rooms, make sure at least the front legs of all seating are on the rug — this anchors the space and ties everything together.

Bedroom

Bedside Tables
Nightstands should be within 2–3 inches of the mattress height for both function and proportion.

Lamps on Nightstands
Bedside lamps (base + shade) should be about the same height as your nightstand for a balanced look.

Whole Home Flow

Curtains Above Windows
Mount rods 4–6 inches above the window frame (or close to the ceiling) to create the illusion of taller ceilings.

Walkway Clearance
Keep main walkways at least 36 inches wide for easy movement. Secondary paths can be 24 inches wide.

Why Numbers Matter

These simple rules are the secret to creating spaces that feel polished, intentional, and inspiring. They balance the beauty you see with the comfort you feel — and that’s what true design is all about.
